About Topic Expert: Ryan Eckerle

Stemming from a bout with childhood cancer and becoming intrigued with the awesome power within the body and mind connection sparked my journey into massage therapy. Throughout my grade school days I studied and experimented with what I was discovering about the use of massage by those before me and well into the past. Come 2004 I enrolled in an intensive six moth massage program consisting of nearly 1000 hours of hands on, classroom, and clinical training. Graduating at the top of my class from Red Mountain Institute for the Healing Arts, Homewood, Alabama, obtaining my certifications in Clinical Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. The following year I completed the national certification exam from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) to add to my credentials.

Swedish massage, deep tissue, and proficiency in myfascial release laid the foundation which I have built upon. Arising from the foundation I have gone on to study areas including; Repetitive Use Injury Technique (RUIT) or Muscle Release Technique, Sports Massage, Lymphatic Massage, massage and cancer, Hot Stone Massage, and others. The vast array of study has given me the opportunity to see various sides and benefits massage therapy/bodywork can offer all of mankind. Throughout the process I have gained much knowledge and experience in a number of working environment and settings.

The journey of my work has included working in a chiropractic office alongside a husband and wife team. The office had an occupational therapist who I worked closely with to compliment her work and give her patients more effective results. I worked my way into acquiring the Lead Massage Therapist in a day spa leading a team of around ten therapists. Then I have experience working with athletes of various levels, working with them in all facets, pre-event, post-event, and at times during the event itself. My journey has led me to do a variety of independent work in massage therapy and bodywork.

A few highlights of my work include working with “The Extreme Makeover Home Addition” staff, crew, and volunteers, in 2006, when in Saint Meinrad, Indiana working on a home for the Farina family. Extensive work with the women’s swimming and diving team of Miami University (Ohio). Some work with Olympic quality athletes. Some work with hockey players at Miami University (Ohio). Work with the American Cancer Society (ACS).

As research continues I get excited about the light science is shedding on massage therapy and bodywork. The benefits it is capable of providing and its ability to compliment modern medicine in a variety of ways and a channel into preventative healthcare.
